Top FibRE Art Supplies to Inspire Your Creations

Fibre art is a captivating and expressive form of creativity. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, having the right materials can make all the difference in your creative journey. In this post, we will explore some of the most popular fibre materials that can inspire your projects and enhance your artistic skills.

Creative Fibre Materials

Fibre art encompasses a variety of techniques, including weaving, knitting, macrame and felting. In many cases the tools required are minimal and often reusable. This is great news because it means that you can put all your energy into finding the best supplies to compliment your work.

To get started, you will need to gather some core supplies that will support your creative process. This will differ depending on the fibre art you have chosen to explore. While there are some cross overs between the fibre arts, there are some materials that are more specific to certain arts than others, and will certainly make the experience easier and more enjoyable as you learn.

Yarn: A variety of yarns is fundamental to any fibre artist. From wool to cotton and acrylic blends, each type has its own unique feel and uses. Experiment with thickness and textures to find what resonates with your style.

You will use yarn in knitting, crochet, weaving and punch needle. For crafts like knitting and crochet be sure to check your patterns for information on the size of yarn you require and which needles or hook size to use, as this will determine the look and success of your project.

For free form tapestry weaving, chose your yarns based on your project vision or chose it because you love it and want to use it. For this type of weaving, you can use any type of yarn colour, material, texture or thickness.

Fibre: Fibre is what is used in felting and spinning. It also plays a big role in tapestry weaving. The most common fibres come from sheep wool but there are some great plant based varieties as well such as hemp, nettle, bamboo or rose fibre.

Some fibres are easier to spin or felt than others. For example a fine 23 micron Merino wool or Corriedale wool will be easier to spin or needle felt as a beginner, than a silky extra fine merino or cotton fibre. Your project will also determine the type of fibre you choose, as some fibres are not very soft and are more suited to robust homewares such as rugs or bags, than wearables.

Consider incorporating other types of fibers, such as mohair, silk, or alpaca to a merino blend. These materials can add depth and uniqueness to your artwork, enhancing the tactile experience and often add a beautiful shine to the wool.

Artisan Ribbons. One of the most satisfying ways to explore your creative desires is through tapestry weaving. Free form tapestry weaving has no rules which allows you to go wild on your colours, textures and techniques. It is also a great way to experience the various types of ribbons and yarns that are available to you.

Artisan ribbons are handcrafted or specially curated ribbons made from unique, often natural or recycled fibres. Unlike mass-produced ribbons, artisan ribbons typically feature:

  • Textured finishes – such as frayed edges, crinkled silk, or hand-dyed colour variations. Often they are pieces sewn together to create a continuous ribbon

  • Luxurious materials – like silk, cotton, linen, chiffon, or sari silk. Alternatively they are made from materials saved from factories such as denim and sari production lines.

  • Artisanal techniques – including hand-tearing, natural dyeing, or small-batch production

  • Sustainable sourcing – often upcycled or ethically produced.

They're popular in fibre art, gift wrapping, weaving, floristry, bridal work, and slow fashion due to their organic feel and unique character. Each ribbon roll or bundle is slightly different, adding a sense of individuality and craftsmanship to creative projects.

Strings and Cords: Single twist strings, ropes and braided cords are most commonly known for their role in Macrame. Macrame strings are often made from cotton, however there are some premium options such as bamboo and Egyptian cotton on the market as well.

Choosing your project will help determine the best cord to use as some, such as braided cords do not fray and cannot be combed out, therefore they are not the right choice if you are wanting to add lush fringes and tassels to your work. Rope is a great choice for plant hangers while single twist strings are perfect for wall hangings. Some brands like Bobbiny, offer a soft braided cord which is ideal for crochet and knitting projects as well.

With the right fibre art supplies, your imagination can flourish. The beauty of fibre art lies in its versatility and the endless possibilities for creation. As you experiment with different techniques and materials, let your unique voice shine through your work. Embrace challenges, and find joy in the process of creating.
