Chunky felted wool rope is one of those fibres that instantly adds impact. Bold, tactile, and beautifully organic.
It’s made by wet-felting wool fibres—often Merino—using heat, moisture, and agitation to bind the fibres together into a dense, rope-like form. The felting process removes stretch and twist, creating a strong, matte fibre with a soft but structured hand feel that holds its shape exceptionally well.

This type of felted rope is loved for statement fibre art and sculptural work. Its thickness and firmness make it ideal for wall hangings, basketry, coiled vessels, garlands, arm knitting, and contemporary macramé where structure is just as important as texture. Unlike spun yarns, felted wool rope won’t fray or unravel, making it perfect for clean finishes, bold outlines, and projects that need stability without added support.
In the studio, chunky felted wool rope pairs beautifully with contrasting textures. Combine it with airy fibres like sari silk ribbon, bamboo or cotton string, or fine wool tops to balance its weight. It also works wonderfully alongside wooden beads, driftwood dowels, or metal hoops for a modern, earthy feel. Try using it as a grounding element in a piece—think borders, anchor knots, handles, or focal lines—while layering softer fibres around it for depth and movement.
Studio tip:
Because felted rope is already set, it doesn’t like tight knots. Instead, work with loose wraps, coils, stitching, or lashing techniques to let the fibre shine without distortion. A little goes a long way, making it a standout addition to any fibre stash.
