What Makes Shaped Weaving Looms Special

Unlike standard looms, shaped weaving looms provide a framed space to weave within, finishing with a modern wooden frame that makes them perfect for decorative pieces.

  • Heart loom: Ideal for romantic or personal projects. The shape encourages symmetrical weaving that fits the curves of a heart.

  • Diamond loom: Offers sharp angles and a geometric feel. It suits modern designs and bold color contrasts.

  • Cloud loom: Features soft, rounded edges. It’s great for whimsical or gentle patterns with flowing lines that work beautifully in a nursery.

These looms help you create textiles that stand out because their shape is built into the weaving process, not added afterward.

How to Use A shaped loom.

Shaped looms help you create textiles that stand out because their shape is built into the weaving process.

  1. Warp the loom: Use the holes around the frame to warp your loom, starting from the far left hand side at the top hole.

    • Knot your end of your warp so it does not pull through the hole.

    • Take your warp string down to the matching hole below, and thread through

    • At the back of the loom, run your warp towards the next hole at the bottom.

    • Thread this up towards the aligning hole. Bring it across to the hole on the right from the back and repeat until you reach the final hole on the other side. You may need to check and adjust your tension.

  1. Choose your yarn: Soft, medium-thickness yarns work well.

  2. Weaving technique: Any weaving technique can be used within a shaped loom, including techniques that produce fringes such as rya.

  3. Finishing: There is no special finishing required. Your weaving stays within the frame.

CREATIVE IDEAS

  • Pattern exploration: Geometric patterns like chevrons or stripes work well with the diamond shaped loom.

  • Yarn selection: Choose soft, fluffy and textured yarns to enhance the cloud’s softness.

  • Colour Choices: Try a gradient pink to red to emphasise the heart shaped loom

Tips for All Shaped Looms

  • Plan your design: Sketch patterns before weaving to fit the loom’s shape.

  • Use a weaving needle or shuttle: These tools help manage yarn through tight curves or angles.

  • Practice patience: Shaped looms can be trickier than rectangular ones but offer rewarding results.
