WIDE SARI SILK RIBBONS - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Updated: 3 days ago

What are Wide Sari Silk Ribbons?

Wide Sari Silk Ribbons are luxurious, eco-conscious ribbons crafted from upcycled sari garments. These soft, richly coloured ribbons carry the soul of traditional Indian textiles and are beloved in fibre art, gift wrapping, weaving, floral styling, and slow fashion.

What are they made from?

They’re made from 100% pure silk, reclaimed from vintage or leftover sari fabrics. Each strip is torn or cut into wide bands (usually 2–7 cm), with raw, frayed edges adding texture and authenticity.

How are they made?

The ribbons are handcrafted by women in India through fair-trade cooperatives. The fabric is cleaned, hand dyed in various painted, ombre or block colour styles, hand-cut or torn, sometimes sewn end-to-end, and then twisted or bundled into hanks or rolls. The result is a one-of-a-kind ribbon with tonal variation, light fraying, and natural charm.

The wide ribbons are usually approx. 5cm -7cm wide with thinner ribbons also being a popular choice.

How to use Wide Sari Silk Ribbons:

  • Weaving: Add rich texture and drape to wall hangings or tapestries

  • Macramé: Great as accent fibres woven into cord-based projects

  • Wrapping: For fibre rainbows or eco-conscious gift wrap with an exquisite look

  • Floristry: Ideal as wedding bouquet ties

  • Jewellery: Braid or knot into necklaces and bracelets

  • Fibre Art: Layer with other ribbons and yarns for a dynamic surface

Techniques:

I love to use wide sari silk ribbons across my tapestry weaving with my favourite technique being a looped rya.

Tips & Tricks:

  • If using in weaving or mixed media, don’t be afraid of the frayed edges — they add depth and softness.

  • For cleaner edges, trim with sharp scissors or fold and stitch.

  • Try steaming or lightly ironing the ribbon to smooth out kinks before use.

  • Blend with other silk or cotton fibres for tonal cohesion.

Pair it with:

  • Cotton Frizz or Silk Chiffon Ribbons

  • Luxe cotton macramé string

  • Neutral-toned wool roving or Corriedale wool for contrast

Final Thoughts:

Wide Sari Silk Ribbons bring warmth, story, and sustainability to any creative project.

Each strand is a little piece of history — colourful, tactile, and perfect for slow crafting.
