The Khadi ribbon range is a designed and developed product from India that has been created for fibre artists and crafters that you will currently not find anywhere else.
Khadi ribbon is soft and the woven structure gives it beautiful texture with contrast between the warp and weft. Ideal for weaving, gift wrapping, floristry and other crafts, these ribbons are a great new addition to your fibre collection.
Khadi is the term used for fabric that has been hand woven using hand spun, hand dyed cotton, and sometimes silk or wool. It has a rich history throughout India originating during the time of the Mahatma Gandhi Swadeshi Movement, a freedom movement in 1920 These beautiful Khadi ribbons are cut from the cloth woven on Indian handlooms. Each cloth is made using a cotton warp and a Tussar silk weft. The cloth is then machine cut to create a 2.5cm wide ribbon. These lenghts are sewn together to make a continous ribbon which is made into skeins of approx. 100g. The ribbons measure approx. 18 metres long.
“If we have the ‘khadi spirit’ in us, we would surround ourselves with simplicity in every walk of life. The ‘khadi spirit’ means infinite patience. For those who know anything about the production of khadi know how patiently the spinners and the weavers have to toil at their trade, and even so must we have patience while we are spinning the thread of Swaraj.”-Mahatma Gandhi
